How To Handle Kansas City, Missouri Municipal Court Cases, Warrants, And Tickets: A Guide By An Attorney

The Kansas City Municipal Court is part of Judicial Circuit 16.  The courthouse is located at 511 E 11th St., Kansas City, MO  64106. It is located at the corner of Locust and 11th Streets.  The court hears misdemeanor cases (such as theft and assault), traffic cases (such as speeding and driving while suspended), municipal code infractions, animal ordinance violations, and even housing code violation cases that arise out of incidents alleged to have occurred in the metropolitan Kansas City Missouri area.

The municipal court has eight divisions that hear these various cases, and each one is assigned a specific letter. The Kansas City, Missouri Municipal Court is the largest municipal court in the metro area. It handles the most cases, and the court date dockets are usually very large.

Persons who have received a citation or a summons to the KCMO Municipal Court should examine their documentation carefully to make sure that they know when and where their court date is.  Depending on the type of case, if you miss a court date, a warrant for your arrest may be issued, or your drivers license may be suspended. If you do not have your paperwork, your attorney can find this information for you. When in doubt, save all your documentation.

It is important to have an attorney when dealing with issues in KCMO Municipal Court.  Too often, people make the mistake of failing to do this. They try to handle things on their own, only to discover that the issues were much more complicated than they anticipated. They discover that big problems have been created, such as pleading guilty when it was not necessary, or having to attend multiple unnecessary court hearings.

In addition, being represented by an attorney can provide the following real benefits. Your attorney can work on withdrawing active warrants and getting you a new court date. Your attorney can also reschedule the time and date of your current court date. You may be surprised to discover that many types of cases can be handled entirely by the attorney, without the client ever having to go to the actual courthouse or appear in front of a judge.

The Municipal Court should not be confused with the Jackson County Circuit Court, which is located near the Municipal Court but hears different types of cases.
